12 Steps 1 God

What is 12 Steps 1 God?
It’s a blog about my personal journey to find sobriety, myself, and God as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I attended my first AA meeting on June 3, 2009. I hope this blog will eventually grow into a friendly and supportive place for others to share their journeys too. Let’s recover together.

Why share my personal journey?
I’ve been writing about my life everyday for over a year in a paper journal. Occasionally, I’ve shared some of the words scribbled on over 1,200 pages with family, friends, and strangers. What usually follows next is an insightful and spiritually refreshing conversation. My hope is that 12 Steps 1 God will open a similar dialogue with anyone out there who is also on his or her own 12-step journey.

Seriously disturbing dream

Someone commented on my blog that a famous psychologist believes that there’s only ONE person in our dreams but many CHARACTERS. And that ONE person is me. Keep that in mind when I tell you my dream. I was somewhere that was like a public park because there was a park but there were also buildings [...]

12 step music fest

Hey everyone…I just came across a really cool event called the 12 Step Music Fest in the Florida Keys on November 5-8, 2009. It looks like a lot of fun. Check it out! http://www.12stepmusicfest.com/general/master.php?pn=home Feel free to comment here if you’re going or have gone in the past. I would love to get more going on my blog [...]

Alcoholic or grateful member of AA?

JD’s comment about my blog: I’m simply a person like you, too. I am not an alcoholic, although alcohol was one of the many drugs I used in my active addiction and I cannot safely drink it. I also rely on the 12 steps of AA (as adapted by my own fellowship) and the God of my understanding for my daily survival and well-being. (I’ve been “clean & sober” for 25 yrs.) Even though I am not an alcoholic, I am a grateful member of AA because the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking, which I have.

AA zealots, freaks, and fundamentalists

About a month ago, a member of my home group invited me to attend this other group she goes to once a week for a Big Book study. It sounded good…focusing on the Big Book. When I got to the church, I was shocked at the number of people. After opening the meeting, me and a friend along with others who were new to the group, were ushered off into a small cramped, hot room with an “AA teacher” (I will explain). We were told we had to go to this other meeting…strange? It got stranger.

Second user dream

I had another user dream the night before celebrating 60 days. It seems my subconscious knows when I’m due for a chip because I had my first user dream the night before celebrating 30 days. How strange! This dream was very straightforward. I was having dinner with a family I didn’t know very well. I [...]
